'Sharing the Experience' series receives award

An IChemE (Institution of Chemical Engineers) product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Mar 29, 2005

Experts in safety and loss prevention from IChemE have awarded the Frank Lees Medal to BP in recognition of their ongoing contribution to safety in the process industries

The decision follows the striking of a new partnership between BP and IChemE that sees the 'Sharing the Experience' series of process safety booklets made available to a wider audience.

The booklets, written by the BP Process Safety Network and now endorsed by IChemE, focus on hazardous situations in petrochemical plants and refineries.

They offer a quick and easy reference guide for operators and managers alike.

Information is presented in straightforward terms with extensive use of illustrations.

The series was originally developed to support in-house training at BP, but their appeal was such that demand, both within BP and beyond, outstripped supply.

BP formed a partnership with IChemE in 2004 to increase production of the series and share lessons learned from recurring incidents to a wider audience.

"BP is recognised as an organisation that continuously demonstrates a commitment to sharing knowledge and best practice.

The company has produced publications that provide a solid grounding in key safety topics and they have wide appeal", said IChemE Chief Executive, Trevor Evans.

"The award recognises, in particular, the publication of the IChemE/BP Process Safety Series.

The 'Sharing the Experience' process safety series covers fourteen topics and over 30,000 copies have been distributed in the last two years.

The next four booklets in the series are available now.

The new titles are as follows.

1 Hazards of Trapped Pressure and Vacuum.

2 Safe Ups and Downs for Process Units.

3 Safe Furnace and Boiler Firing.

4 Hazards of Electricity and Static Electricity.

Six other titles will be released during 2005.

Iain Conn, Executive Director of the BP Group, will receive the medal on behalf of the company at the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday 11 July 2005.
