HRH Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, will attend the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow on Wednesday 13 July 2005

HRH Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, will attend the 7th World Congress of Chemical Engineering at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow on Wednesday 13 July 2005.

The Princess, who has always expressed a strong interest in scientific matters, is the congress Patron.

She will participate in a varied programme of activities including attendance at a plenary lecture to be given by His Excellency George Maxwell Richards, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and himself a chemical engineer.

The Princess will give a vote of thanks and address the congress following Richard's contribution.

The Princess will also tour the congress exhibition, which features more than 80 companies in a comprehensive show of products and services for chemical and process engineers and attend a special luncheon, given in her honour, at which leading figures from the global chemical and process community will be present.

In a special message to congress delegates the Princess said, "Through their involvement in manufacturing, construction, energy generation, healthcare and environmental protection, as well as leadership roles in many well-known organisations, chemical engineers make an enormous contribution to the quality of our daily lives.

It is particularly fitting that the 7th World Congress comes to Scotland, which is the centre of the UK oil and gas industry; a sector that has long been synonymous with chemical engineering." The Princess also expressed strong support for the public outreach ambitions of the event.

She said, "Delegates at the congress are encouraged to look beyond the conference hall and recognise that they exist in an interdependent world where public engagement and understanding are critically important".

Over 2000 visitors from 65 nations are expected to arrive in Glasgow for the congress, which opened with a welcome reception at the Glasgow Science Centre on Sunday 10 July 2005.
