IChemE welcomes the proposed increased funding from Gordon Brown for secondary schools and science research, plus adds some further ideas for the spending

Responding to Gordon Brown's Pre-Budget Report, the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Chief Executive, Dr David Brown said: "The additional GBP50k for every secondary school is great news But it depends upon how you spend it and here's a good idea

Head teachers should use this money to double the pay for outstanding Maths and Physics teachers.

No hassle, no bureaucracy, just do it.

Then step back and watch the impact that this will have on the UK's science and engineering community.

Overnight, the mood will change.

The brightest and best teachers will be drawn to two crucial subjects that are fundamental to maintaining our competitive advantage, inspiring their pupils to do likewise".

IChemE Director of Policy, Andrew Furlong, welcomes the additional funding proposed for science research.

He said: "Engineers will welcome the promise of continued investment in the growth of the UK's science and innovation.

The GBP1Bn commitment to a single health research fund is particularly encouraging, given the huge potential in bioscience and biochemical engineering.

However, structural reform of NHS procurement is essential.

Steps must be taken to free up demand and turn the health service into a hungry consumer of innovation.

The proposal to streamline the planning mechanism for major infrastructure projects is also excellent news.

The UK is facing some major energy decisions in the next few years and we cannot afford to get bogged down in a Sizewell B type planning quagmire.".
