Over 400 process safety experts will gather in Edinburgh next week for the 12th International Symposium on Loss Prevention and Safety Promotion in the Process Industries

The implications and lessons learned from the 2005 Texas City explosion will be uppermost in the minds of the delegates to the 12th International Symposium on Loss Prevention and Safety Promotion in the Process Industries Organised by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the symposium has attracted registrations from more than thirty countries

The record attendance has been driven by a comprehensive technical programme organized around four key themes:.

* Risk Assessment and Management.

* Human Factors and Safety Systems Management.

* Learning from Accidents, and Experience from Other Industries.

* Chemical Reactivity, including Hazard Identification.

The main programme is augmented by three high profile plenary contributors, including BP Group Engineering Director, John Baxter, who is expected to set out his company's latest thinking in light of the Baker Report on the Texas City incident.

Chairman of the UK Health and Safety Commission, Bill Callaghan, will outline his views on the criticality of process safety systems and indicators in major hazard industries.

The line-up is completed with a view from the nuclear industry from BNFL Chief Executive, Michael Parker.

The key to success in process safety is the ability to translate knowledge into practice says John Atherton of the IChemE: "The programme will focus heavily on lessons learned, not just from accidents and near misses but also from successful process operations, the overwhelming majority of which are incident free".

The symposium, which opens at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Tuesday 22nd May, includes an exhibition featuring twenty five organization offering process safety products, training advice and guidance.
