IChemE calls for papers to "Hazards XX"
symposium
To harness lessons from the past and knowledge about loss prevention in the chemical and process industries, the IChemE has issued a call for papers to its 20th Hazards symposium
As new industries emerge to implement sustainable technologies on a commercial scale, how can they learn from lessons past, and practise the highest safety standards? To facilitate this process, the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has issued a call for papers to its 20th Hazards symposium The event, organized by the IChemE North West Branch, will provide a platform for practitioners in process safety and environmental protection to discuss new developments in the field

Participants can submit papers in all relevant areas including:.
* Regulations in practice.
* Recent research into process safety and environmental protection.
* Measuring safety performance.
* Managing a safety culture.
* Predicting accidents.
* Sharing safety knowledge in SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises).
* Safety across the supply chain.
* Inherently safer design.
* New fuels and carbon capture.
* Safety in technology export.
Symposium Organiser, Mike Adams said: "The public expect high health and safety standards from the chemical and process industries, and these expectations will rise in industrialised and developing nations alike.
In order to demonstrate our commitment to safety and environmental protection, we need to share best practice with fellow professionals in the field and learn from the past so that we do not make the same mistakes again.
This is especially important for new industries such as carbon capture and storage, and biofuels.
Similarly, as technology is transferred to emerging economies, we should ensure that practitioners in those countries know how to use the technology safely".
Adams also stresses the need to share knowledge on safety in the 'old' industries.
""We cannot become complacent.
We need to maintain our current competencies and standards so that familiarity does not lead to disaster".
The IChemE "Hazards XX" symposium - 'Harnessing Knowledge - Challenging Complacency', will take place on 15-17 April 2008 at the University of Manchester.
Participants who wish to submit synopses for papers need to do so by 22nd June 2007.
