Two new UK chemical engineering research facilities have opened within the space of 48 hours, ahead of record student intake figures, expected next week

The University of Nottingham is set to become a world leader in 'clean' chemistry and engineering following the opening of a new multi-million pound research centre, Driving Innovation in Chemistry and Engineering (DICE), on Thursday The centre will be used to discover new sustainable technologies, as well as inspire young people at school and university, encouraging them to consider chemistry or engineering as a career

DICE will focus on rapid innovation in environmentally friendly ways of making chemicals, more efficient use of energy, safer chemical products, renewable raw materials, 'zero-waste' processes and related research.

On Friday, a new research laboratory was opened 280 miles north, at the Strathclyde University Department of Chemical and Process Engineering.

Guest speaker Professor Ramesh Mashelkar, President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) said he could already see the many benefits of the new laboratory: "I have no doubt that this excellent new facility will help enormously in the quest to further expand research capacity, develop interdisciplinary potential and to identify new synergies in research collaboration," he added.

The openings came ahead of next week's release of UCAS' final 2007 UK university admission figures, where a record high chemical engineering undergraduate intake is expected to be confirmed.
