International achievement award in India
A British chemical engineer spent part of his Christmas break in India, being presented with an award recognising his outstanding contribution to science, engineering and technology in the country
Neil Atkinson, Director of Qualifications and International Development at the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), was presented with the 2007 Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award by IIChE President, Mr K Venkataramanan (Larsen and Toubro) at a presentation in Calcutta last month, and was praised for helping the Indian chemical engineering profession Speaking at the awards ceremony, Atkinson said it was an enormous thrill to have been so recognised: "The Indian process industries are rapidly developing across all sectors

Atkinson has played a key role in the approval of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineering (IIChE) which forms the basis for joint cooperations.
Much has already followed: including a major Indian TV broadcast on the IChemE Technical Roadmap 'Shared Challenges, Shared Solutions', the formative development of an Indian Process Safety Centre to be launched later this year, as well as laying the first steps towards a benchmarking of the undergraduate programmes at the leading chemical engineering departments, against international best practice.
