IChemE symposium focuses on process safety

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has announced that its Hazards XXI symposium is set to take place on 9-12 November 2009 at the Manchester Conference Centre.

The event is aimed at process safety experts and will focus on current challenges in process safety and environmental protection.

It will feature around 100 presentations and include keynote contributions by John Bresland from the US Chemical Safety Board, safety expert Trevor Kletz, and Sam Mannan from the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center in Texas.

Bresland will use the Burgoyne Memorial Lecture to re-examine lessons learned in a catalogue of process safety incidents ranging from sugar to oil refineries.

Kletz's presentation will review the ICI's lasting contribution to process safety, and Mannan will present an analysis of the Buncefield explosion and fire.

Parallel session themes include: safety management; new process safety technology; sharing safety knowledge; HAZOP; safe process design; safety performance indicators; compliance with standards; risk assessment and analysis; emerging energy technologies; and human factors and behaviour.

Speakers at the conference dinner include Judith Hackitt, chair of the Health and Safety Executive, and Bill Giles, retired head of the BBC weather centre.
