Setting the Trend - West Sussex Firm Wins Business of the Year at Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MX2007) A company from Horsham has won the 'Business of the Year' award at the 25th Manufacturing Excellence Awards (MX2007) in London Trend Control Systems, a business within Honeywell Automation and Controls Solutions, staved off competition from hundreds of the UK's most robust firms in the manufacturing and business world to win the top trophy sponsored by the DTI's Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS)

The firm also won the Warwick Manufacturing Group Award for Logistics and Resource Efficiency.

Based in Horsham, West Sussex, the firm's products cover the full range of building control hardware including controllers, supervisor software, valves and actuators, sensors and motor controls.

Customers include a wide range of high-profile international companies.

Tim Darkes, the company's Managing Director, said: '' The process of entering the IMechE MX Awards has been a fantastic opportunity for us to summarise our performance and explore areas for further improvement by benchmarking with our counterparts across UK industry''.

MX is the most prestigious award scheme in the UK and believed to be the longest running since its establishment 25 years ago.

MBDA, which has offices in Stevenage and Lostok, Lancashire, won the BP Award for Best Partnership between Business and Education - one of 13 top 'Oscars' up for grabs at the awards night on 13 June.

Renowned journalist, Andrew Marr, presented the awards at the Marriott Hotel where he was joined by Margaret Hodge, Minister for Industry and Regions, who said: "Manufacturing continues to play a vital role in the UK economy and the Government is determined to ensure that it stays that way.

These awards are proof that success comes from constantly improving, innovating and investing - in new ideas, new production techniques and new products.

The winners for MX2007 puts the spotlight on the very best of these companies and their success means success for us all: success for employees, success for consumers and success for Britain.

My congratulations goes to the company which has gone from strength to strength, demonstrating that employing best practice will lead to success and ultimately long term sustainability.

The future of manufacturing depends on industry raising investment, applying science and innovation, best practice and skills to create even better British products that comply with world demand in today's markets.

The MX Awards show it can be done," she added.

This is the first time in the MX 25 year history that 25 companies have been chosen for the 13 awards.

David Wright of MAS and an MX Judge said: "In two days we saw more than 20 companies whose activities and products were amazingly diverse - these included double glazing, environmentally friendly pesticides, pre-prepared meals and lithographic printing plates".
