Workshops on flow measurement and
industrial flows
This series of three workshops explaining flow measurement technology are run by the Cambridge University Institute for Manufacturing, supported by Endress + Hauser
The workshops will introduce participants to the basics of fluid flow behaviour, provide an overview of flow measurement techniques and flowmeter selection as well as a deeper understanding of some modern designs of flowmeter Day 1 (a half-day) provides an introduction to industrial flows

New wallchart simplifies IEC61508
August 2004 was the deadline for IEC 61508, the standard focusing on safety-related systems that incorporate electrical, electronic or programmable instruments: this step by step wallchart will help
The first workshop gives an overview of industrial flows for sales staff and others involved with instrumentation, pipework, pumping systems and other related equipment, those who would benefit from a greater technical understanding of flow behaviour.
The workshop will include: basic ideas of flow and fluid behaviour; commonly measured fluid parameters; flow losses in pipework; compressible flow effects; special phenomena in industrial flows including unsteady, oscillating and multiphase flows; application of computational fluid dynamics.
The course book is entitled 'An introductory guide to industrial flow'.

Day 2 (a whole day) covers flow measurement and flowmeter selection.
This workshop gives a general introduction to measuring flow, including problems that may arise when using flowmeters and software to support equipment selection.
It is particularly suitable for staff responsible for specification and purchasing of flowmeters and those in sales and marketing who are new to the industry.
The workshop will include: an overview of flow measurement; flowmeter selection: options and limitations orifice meters, current discharge coefficients and other differential pressure devices; positive displacement, turbine, vortex, electromagnetic and ultrasonic meters; coriolis, thermal and other mass meters; hands-on sessions with air and water flow rigs.
The course book is entitled 'An introductory guide to flow measurement'.
Day 3 (a whole day) will cover current flowmeter technologies.
The final workshop provides a more advanced consideration of the design, operation and application of some current flowmeter designs.
It is aimed at instrument and project engineers and contractors in R+D, design and manufacturing.
The workshop will include presentations by manufacturers of their own experiences.
It will cover: volumetric meters: vortex, electromagnetic, ultrasonic mass meters: thermal, coriolis industrial designs for liquids and gases; maintenance, site verification and internet options.
The course book is entitled 'Flow measurement handbook'.
Who should attend? The first two workshops are designed for those in sales and marketing, or those responsible for specification or purchase of equipment, who would benefit from a basic understanding of the subject areas.
The final workshop is also for R+D, design, manufacturing or field staff, who need a deeper insight into modern flowmeter designs.
The presenters will include speakers from Endress+Hauser, Krohne, ABB, Panametrics and Loughborough University.
The workshop series will be directed by Roger Baker of the Institute for Manufacturing, author of several books in this field.
Course books by Roger Baker, are included in the fee for each workshop.
All three workshops will be held at the Institute for Manufacturing, Mill Lane, Cambridge.
