Tiles are hygienic - what about the grout?

In the super-hygienic conditions essential for hospitals, restaurants, bathrooms, toilet facilities, laundries, food-processing environments and similar facilities, it is well accepted that impervious, easy-to-clean tiled surfaces are among the most efficient at keeping bugs at bay.
But what is not always appreciated is that in order to sustain an uncontaminated environment, the tiles should always be installed using the latest formulations of hygienic adhesives and grouting materials.
The employment of modern anti-fungal materials makes it almost impossible for germs, viruses or other 'nasties' to establish a foothold in such locations, whether on walls, floors or ceilings.
It was exactly for these reasons that the Instarmac Ultra range of pre-blended adhesives and grouts (manufactured to BS EN 9002: 1994 standards) were developed and formulated.
Ultra products contains a fungicide additive, which prevents the build up of fungi and mould on bathroom and kitchen surfaces, as well as on the exposed grout between the tiles.
They are also formulated to meet specific application conditions and the varied bonding requirements of different types of tile.
The range includes products with rapid set, high grab and non-slip properties for dry, intermittently wet, or continually wet conditions, as well as thick bed adhesives to facilitate variations in tile bond faces and others to accommodate flexural movement in order to provide a stable base and alleviate vibration.
In order to satisfy all requirements, the Tamworth based manufacturer also produces two grades of anti-fungal levelling compounds to provide the perfect sub-base for floor tiles.
Levelling not only ensures a more even and overall bond, but also eliminates any possibility of bacteria establishing itself in the interstices between the uneven substrate and the tile.
Paul Butcher, Instarmac Sales Director commented, "Since its launch, the Ultra range of has surpassed all expectations, but we are striving to do more.
The company also now offers its customers additional services such as an 'application' help line, specification writing, technical site and sales support, as well as product training".
