Paper manufacturer uses river water filtration

Merseyside based Industrial Purification Systems (IPS), in co-operation with their specialist paper industry distributor Premier Filtration, has secured a GBP120,000 contract with Swedish paper manufacturer Billerud Beetham to supply an advanced media filtration system for the provision of high grade water from a variable river water source.

Installation of this system is currently underway at the Billerud Beetham Cumbrian paper mill site, which has been producing paper for over 200 years.

With the mill running 24 hours a day, the company operates a strict environmental protection strategy and is constantly looking to new technology to provide efficient methods of production.

Says Steve Cupples, managing director of IPS: "This advanced media filtration has been specially developed for use in all types of water filtration systems, including intake waters from rivers, lakes and canals, and is particularly effective in the removal of algae and other organic material often found in raw water supplies.

Securing such a contract has been of major significance both as an endorsement of the effectiveness of our filtration systems but also in highlighting the importance that a company such as Billerud Beetham places on environmental and efficient production methods".

Matthew Bradbury, Project Engineer from Billerud Beetham said: "By utilising river water we will significantly reduce our demands on the more expensive mains water supply.

This will both reduce our operational costs whilst, at the same time significantly reduce any impact on the environment.".
