The surface of a pouring stream of molten metal produces thin oxide layers, which have to be taken into consideration for infrared measurements since the emissivity of these layers varies significantly from the emissivity of the actual metal being poured.
For this reason we recommend that a dual-wavelength ('Ratio') pyrometer is used for this measurement.
These pyrometers detect the emitted radiation at two different wavelengths and the mathematics show that the resultant temperature measurement becomes mainly independent of the emissivity of the pouring metal.
However a standard ratio pyrometer alone will not be successful for many pouring stream measurements, since there are other influencing factors that can give rise to incorrect readings.
The main problem being that at the beginning and end of the pour, the stream can break up and the pyrometer becomes confused by the significant change in the stream appearance.
Recognising this problem Impac have introduced the ISAR 12-LO/GS, which has application specific signal conditioning which remove these parts of the reading to provide only the valid temperature data needed for temperature control.
To compliment the ISAR 12-LO/GS Impac have also introduced the IS 8-GS a handheld instrument designed specifically for pouring stream measurements.
The IS 8-GS is a single wavelength instrument working at a very short wavelength, also incorporates special software for overcoming the identified problems of measuring molten metal streams.
