Chemtex and Corrosion Middle East, the region's only exhibition for the chemical, petrochemical, chemical process technology, corrosion control and management industries, is set to expand for 2004

Chemtex and Corrosion Middle East, the region's only international exhibition for the chemical, petrochemical, chemical process technology, corrosion control and management industries, is set to expand further in 2004, with organisers International Expo-Consults (IEC) targeting a major increase in exhibitor space Reporting healthy early bookings for the event, IEC said the event will, for the first time, feature separate industry specific arenas for the oil and gas, chemicals and corrosion sectors

"This initiative is in response to industry demand voiced during this year's very successful exhibition.

The inclusion of these dedicated forums will ensure a highly focused show for both exhibitors and visitors," said Mohammed Falaknaz, Vice President, IEC.

"Apart from its own indigenous production, the region imports more than USD15 billion worth of petrochemical and chemical products annually.

In addition the International Energy Authority forecasts that demand for Middle East oil will rise by 72%, to 40 million barrels a day, by 2010, creating additional demand for chemical process and anti corrosion technology.

"With markets elsewhere in the world depressed, international companies are increasingly prioritising the region in their strategic growth plans," said Falaknaz.

Chemtex and Corrosion Middle East 2003, held at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre from March 4-6, 2003 featured over 70 companies and industry organisations and national pavilions from India and China.

Backed by NACE, the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, the exhibition had a renewed focus on chemical process technology and featured dedicated areas for speciality chemicals and polymer raw materials and a professional industry-led seminar programme.

Underlining the importance of the chemical industry's contribution to Dubai's economic development, Ahmed Al Banna, Director General of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry announced, at the show, plans to create a sector specific business group.

Welcoming the decision, Falaknaz said it will ensure the strategically important chemicals sector will have a voice at the highest levels.

"It will enable everyone involved in the development of petrochemical, chemical and chemical processing businesses to work in partnership with the chamber and local and federal authorities to ensure the challenges facing the industry are addressed effectively".

The show's international appeal was highlighted by its visitor footprint that extended from the USA, to Europe, Russia and the CIS, Africa, the Middle and Far East and Australia.

Although just over two thirds of visitors (69.7%) were from the UAE, there were also significant numbers from neighbouring GCC states (16.5%), Iran, India, Pakistan, Syria, and Turkey.

Reinforcing the Chemtex and Corrosion status as the leading petrochemical and corrosion industries showcase, first time participant IMG Offshore staged the Middle East launch of its composite wrapping corrosion repair technology at the exhibition.

"We received a lot of interest and hope to sign deals with companies in Qatar and Saudi Arabia as a direct result of our participation," said Robert Gough, Business Manager IMG Offshore.

Saudi Arabia's Ali Reza Group also debuted its locally produced protective coating product RezKem at the event.

"The show was the right business environment to introduce Rezkem to the market.

We are confident of translating the large number of enquiries we had into firm orders".

Among international companies targeting regional market expansion was Larsen and Toubro, India's largest engineering conglomerate, which is prioritising the Middle East as part of its strategy to realign itself from an India-centric company to a region-centric multinational.

The USD2 billion turnover giant displayed its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project skills and experience at the show and in private meetings with representatives of leading regional petrochemical organisations.

"We had a number of excellent meetings and are confident of generating good business in the coming months," said Joseph Mathew, General Manager, International Business Development, Larsen and Toubro.

Chemtex and Corrosion Midddle East 2004 will be held from September 14 -1 6, 2004, Dubai International Exhibition Centre, Dubai, UAE.
