On Monday, 20 October, in Houston, Texas, ISA will acknowledge the exceptional achievements of leading professionals and practitioners of automation + control at its annual Honours and Awards banquet

On Monday, 20 October, in Houston, Texas, ISA will acknowledge the exceptional achievements of leading professionals and practitioners of automation + control at its annual Honours and Awards banquet This gala affair is held in conjunction with ISA EXPO 2003, the leading North American automation and control event, taking place 21-23 October at the Reliant Center in Houston

Judy G Stevenson, owner and president of Magnetrol International, USA, will receive the highest ISA accolade: Honorary Membership.

The Society presents honorary membership each year to individuals who have shown a high level of support of, and/or contributions to, the advancement of the arts and sciences of instrumentation, systems, and automation.

Stevenson originally joined Magnetrol as a part-time book-keeper.

In 1978, 14 years after coming to Magnetrol in a part-time clerical position, Stevenson bought the company.

Under her leadership, Magnetrol has prospered, growing to a multi-million dollar operation with more than 450 employees worldwide.

Stevenson attributes the Magnetrol success to her aggressive commitment to research and development, new products, new technologies, training, and progressive and creative thinking, as well as to the company people-oriented culture and strong emphasis on the family.

The company maintains the Magnetrol Scholarship Fund and supports other local educational funds, community events, and numerous organisations and charities.

In addition to her duties at Magnetrol, Stevenson serves on the Board of Trustees at North Central College.

She is a member of the Chief Executive Officers Club and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).

Stevenson was named the YWCA Businesswoman of the Year in DuPage County in 1985, the YWCA Outstanding Woman Leader of DuPage County in 1997, and was recognised as leader of one of the Top 500 Women-Owned Businesses in the country by Working Woman magazine (1998-2001).

John P Gerry, president of ExperTune, a software company he founded in 1987 in Hubertus, Wisconsin, USA, will receive the Douglas H Annin Award, given to recognise an outstanding achievement in the design or development of components of an automatic control system from the input measurement through the final control element.

Gerry is cited for his contributions to the development of a PID tuning engine and its commercial applications.

T Duncan Schleiss, vice president of marketing at Emerson Process Management, Austin, Texas, USA, will be presented the E.G Bailey Award to recognise excellence in the design, development, or application in instrumentation and control systems in the utilities or process control industries.

He is honoured for his leadership in introducing and refining the DeltaV product line, a revolutionary automation system utilizing digital communication protocols.

David M Auslander, professor of mechanical engineering and associate dean for student affairs and research at University of California at Berkeley, USA, will receive the Donald P Eckman Education Award.

His award recognises pioneering contributions to the development of innovative educational methods and materials for design and implementation of computer-based control and instrumentation systems and the dissemination of that education and technological methodology at universities worldwide.

The following individuals are elected ISA Fellows to acknowledge outstanding achievement in scientific or engineering fields as recognized by ISA peers; five years as an ISA senior member; and at least 10 years in instrumentation development, application, operation, management, or teaching.

Joseph S Alford, Jr, engineering advisor in the Engineering Technology Center of Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, in recognition of advancements in state-of-the-art instrumentation, control, and data analysis in the pharmaceutical industry.

Robert E Otto, consultant, REO Associates LLC, St Louis, USA, in recognition of development and advancements in process control computers and software.

William A Stange, senior engineer, US Air Force, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, USA, in recognition of development and advancement of turbine engines non-intrusive stress measurement system technology.

Ian Verhappen, engineering associate, Syncrude Canada Ltd, Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, in recognition of contributions to the development and understanding of Fieldbus technology.

W Gerald Wilbanks, vice president and partner, Documentation and Engineering Services LLC, Birmingham, Ala, USA, in recognition of leadership, engineering, and technical management in instrumentation, systems, and automation.
