DEFRA and others are already stating that it will not be enough to present data; the quality and applicability of the data must also be demonstrated.
The Environment Agency MCERTS places the responsibility of the demonstration the quality of the data at the point of use; not at the point of generation.
Hence the uncertainty chain becomes an issue.
The sources of data might be unattended and remote monitoring instruments measuring the environment or a part of a process or they might be goods in transit in a supply chain.
The problems are the same.
1) Rapidly increasing amounts of data from widely spread, infrequently attended devices.
2) Validation of the rapidly increasing volumes of data and comparability with data from disparate sources.
3) Comparability with past data.
4) Legacy communication systems which must be blended with very rapidly changing technology.
5) There are many potential recipients of the data with the potential for serious information overload for each.
The following FREE presentations will be offered at MTEC in the Industrial Networks Technology Centre, from 11am till lunchtime on Thursday 17 February, for all MTEC visitors and stand attendees.
1) Introduction; The challenge of collecting data from wide spread and disparate sources, by George Turnbull, Open Automation and Control.
2) The need to optimise the data structure, by Laurie Reynolds, Laurie Reynolds Associates (UK) .
3) Concentrating widespread data, by Brian Back, Radiotech.
4) Fieldbus into the future, by Gareth Johnston, ABB.
A discussion forum will follow chaired by George Turnbull.
This seminar and forum will be particularly useful to senior management who want to get a feel for the scope of the challenges and where to start looking for solutions.
Engineers involved in one or more aspects of the range of issues will also find the sessions useful for detail and the interface with other issues.
