Multi-head weigher eliminates fishery
give-away

A new Ishida multihead weigher at a leading Norwegian fishery, Domstein Enghav, has achieved a GBP83,000 saving per annum through the virtual elimination of product giveaway

Thanks to the introduction of an Ishida multihead weigher at its factory in Haugesund, Norway, leading fishery Domstein Enghav has achieved a saving of around 1 million Norwegian Kroner (equivalent to GBP83,000 and Euro123,000) per year through the virtual elimination of product giveaway Prior to the installation of the Ishida weigher, their ranges of fish balls, supplied to both retail and foodservice markets, were weighed and packed by hand

Using this time consuming and labour intensive method meant it was practically impossible to achieve the required target weight.

While automation was the obvious answer, the nature of the product meant that efficient weighing remained a challenge: The fishballs are cooked and thus tend to stick both to each other and to the weigher contact parts.

They are also quite soft and need to be handled carefully to prevent product damage.

The Ishida solution was its recently launched CCW-RS-210W-S/30-WP model.

This features contact parts made of hex embossed stainless steel, which help to prevent product from sticking to the sides or clumping together.

In addition, the product is also sprayed with water to further ease its passage through the weigher and protect the product from impact damage.

At Domstein Enghav, the weigher achieves average speeds of 20 trays per minute, on target weights from 300g to 3.6kg, with minimum giveaway.

The fish balls are weighed into trays, which are presented under the weigher in three patterns, filling one, two or three trays together, depending on their size.

Weighed product is dropped into a timing hopper, from which a swinging chute transfers each weighment into dipping funnels.

These then carefully place the fish balls into the trays, avoiding spillage and keeping the sealing edges of the trays clean.

Two funnels are used for the one and two tray patterns.

The funnels discharge the product either into a single large tray or into two separate smaller trays.

A second three-funnel system is used for the three-tray pattern.

Ishida was responsible for the entire line installation including all ancillary equipment and, according to the Domstein Enghav managing director Sigurd A Sande, was the ideal choice for the project: "The quality of the equipment offered by Ishida was a key factor in our initial decision to purchase, but equally important has been the high levels of service throughout - from initial discussions to installation and after sales support," he comments.

The company is now considering using the weigher for other fish products including fishcakes and fish burgers. Request a free brochure from Ishida Europe ...
