Southern Water removes chemical spillage risk

An ISS Safety product story

ISS Safety was recently awarded a contract to supply its 'Chemi-safe' safety system for chemical spillage protection during regular deliveries at Southern Water waste treatment plants

ISS Safety was recently awarded a contract to supply its 'Chemi-safe' safety system into the Southern Water Eastry Waste Treatment plant near Deal, in Kent.

Working with sub-contractors and valve suppliers, ISS was given the task of project managing the design and installation of the system.

Gary Sayers, Senior Project Engineer, said: "Southern Water has a huge programme of improvement work across our region and health and safety is our top priority.

Installing equipment like the Chemi-safe means we can ensure both our staff safety and reduce the risk of pollution".

'Chemi-safe' is designed to ensure dangerous chemicals used in the treatment of sewage and wastewater are prohibited from leaking or spilling into the water table during the loading process.

Systems previously employed use padlocks or padlocks with chains in conjunction with permit to work policies, often leaving the operating company open to accidents caused by human error.

The ISS 'Chemi-safe' system removes human error via the use of trapped key interlocks.

'Trapped Key Interlocks' force the operator through a predetermined operating sequence ensuring that dangerous shortcuts and human error cannot cause environmental harm.

'Chemi-safe' forces the tanker driver to divert the bund drain valve to a storage tank prior to the opening of the dosing cabinet door, ensuring if a chemical spill occurs it will be safely captured in the underground storage tank and not find its way into the water table.

Southern Water joins a number of UK Utility companies now employing 'Chemi-safe' in WTW and STW systems to control the chemical loading process.
