Invensys is implementing Triconex safety instrumented systems at the Lotte Daesan Petrochemical Corporation ethylene plant in Korea, replacing a previous ABB/August ESD installation

Invensys Process Systems has been selected to implement Triconex safety and critical control systems and professional services for Lotte Daesan Petrochemical Corporation at its 600,000 TPY naphtha cracking center (NCC), south of Seoul, on the western coast of Korea This plant manufactures ethylene and propylene used to produce plastics, synthetic fibers and other products within the Daesan complex of adjacent integrated petrochemical plants

The Invensys implementation includes a total of 10 Tricon V9 triple-modular redundant (TMR) safety instrumented systems, and completely replaces the existing ABB/August safety system infrastructure.

This had been the largest ABB/August installation in Korea.

The replacement includes all programming and hardware, including the plant safety systems I/O marshalling equipment.

Invensys was selected due to strong technical and local support capabilities, long term product support track record, and wide Invensys experience in Korea.

In conjunction with Triconex services, Invensys Korea is providing Lotte Daesan Petrochemical with project management, engineering services, integration testing, factory acceptance testing, and training.

The range of on-site services includes installation, site acceptance testing, commissioning, and system start-up.

The Tricon is an industry-certified state-of -the-art fault tolerant controller based on triple-modular redundant (TMR) architecture for safety and critical control applications.

The TMR architecture employs three isolated, parallel control systems and extensive diagnostics integrated into one system.

The system uses two-out-of-three voting to provide high integrity, error-free, uninterrupted process operation with no single point of failure.

The Tricon controller redundant control functions and diagnostics are embedded and transparent, and the system behaves as a single control device to the engineer or operator.

The new Tricon implementation at Lotte Deasan Petrochemical adds to Invensys presence at the Deasan petrochemical complex.

An earlier Tricon installation has been in service since 2001 for safety instrumented systems and integrated turbine/compressor control at the second NCC plant owned by another company in the complex.

Lotte Daesan Petrochemical Corporation is a business unit of Honam Petrochemical Corporation.

The Lotte Daesan NCC plant is part of the large integrated complex at Daesan, which was previously owned by Hyundai Petrochemical and is now operated by several companies.

From two NCC plants and 24 satellite facilities, the entire complex produces over one million tons of ethylene products and 3.3 million tons of affiliated products, the largest amount for a single complex in the world.
