Deregulation, competitive real-time markets, and environmental emissions constraints are issues that affect the ability of power generation companies to perform profitably

To remain competitive, GenCos have implemented ERP, CRM and SCM and many other systems While these have helped somewhat, in many cases they have compounded the challenges by simply generating vast amounts of data - but not the information that enables real-time business decisions and add value

Value comes from not only having access to data, but knowing how to convert that data into information that is integrated into your business processes.

Invensys provides a suite of technology and integrated applications that seamlessly link disparate data and systems with operating assets to create commercial market opportunities.

By carefully matching plant assets to market and contractual requirements, Invensys provides a solution for maximising the optionality of generation assets.

"Invensys automation technology has been widely applied in the Power Generation Sector.

But we have now created a business group to focus on delivering this real-time decision-support approach specifically for the power generation sector," said Leo Quinn, Chief Operating Officer of Production Management.

"We work collaboratively with our customers to address, not only production controls, but also take a 360 degree look around the automation platform to improve how a customer accesses information and applies decision rules to make real-time decisions".

"The Invensys Power Sector vertical business unit will leverage the intellectual capital that exists across Invensys to create a customer 'performance roadmap'.

This will help capture enterprise performance potential through an execution framework that limits economic, technical, and regulatory risks and yet maximises commercial performance," said Barry Dyson, who was recently appointed vice president and general manager for Invensys Power Industry Vertical business unit.

As a leader in automation technology with deep power industry experience, Invensys is well positioned to create global solutions for generation companies worldwide.

Invensys brands that have significant relevance to the Power sector include APV, Avantis, Eurotherm, Esscor, Foxboro, Triconex, and WonderWare.

Invensys is demonstrating some of these performance-enhancing automation solutions at PowerGen in Dusseldorf (Stand M10) from May 6-8, 2003.

These solutions are designed to increase marginal profitability, maximise return on investment (ROI) for central station, merchant, and industrial power plants by increasing generation efficiency, reducing emissions, maximising asset availability, and/or reducing operating and maintenance costs.

Invensys will demonstrate: PowRX - an on-line performance monitoring system for power plants.

Invensys Process Systems offers PowRx (based on SimSCI ARPM Automated Rigorous Performance Monitoring), a comprehensive on-line performance monitoring solution for today's plant performance monitoring challenges in the Power Industry.

PowRX is a real-time, model-based solution with world-class data reconciliation technology that provides dependable performance analysis services 365 days per year.

Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) Safety PLCs from Invensys.

Triconex supplies products, systems and services for safety, critical control and turbo-machinery applications.

The company's fault tolerant system uses a TMR architecture, which makes it a fault tolerant solution ideal for continuous process industry applications.

Invensys will demonstrate the ability of the systems to execute its assigned task in the presence of a fault or indeed multiple faults.

These are further illustrated by the physical removal of CPUs, Input and Output modules as well as PSUs which provide an uninterrupted process operation.

Triconex is a full service, turnkey supplier of networked multi-system controls for combined-cycle, utility steam turbine generator, compressors, and other units.

Recently the company launched integrated turbine generator and integrated turbine compressor controls.

These, capital saving systems have become more feasible because of the reliability and power of the TS 1000 (Simplex) and TS 3000 (TMR) systems.

Freiplan is a new Safety Planning System for Power Plants.

The description and documentation of process-technological facilities and complex pipeline systems nowadays is mostly done with both database and CAD systems.

Technical data, rules and methods are stored in database systems (operation systems) while the process-technological scheme is depicted in system diagrams.

A joint development between Innotec and Invensys is a fully object-based CAE - Engineering System for the Power Industry.

Comos PT fulfils all requirements of basic and detail engineering in Power Plant construction (based on KKS and VGB Standards), on one side, and combined with an online Interface into the project database of I/A Series Power DCS-System, on the other side.

The I/A Series system is an industrial process control open application.

The I/A Series on display demonstrates how the platform continues to be a technology world leader, offering the greatest variety of configuration options, the lowest automation life cycle costs, and the most powerful toolsets for the entire enterprise to keep customers one step ahead of competition.
