SMS Water meter reading - a first in Malaysia

Jekyll Electronic Technology, a leading UK designer and manufacturer of Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) products, has successfully implemented an SMS based data collection system with their Malaysian partner EMS Technologies.

Following on from the success of the project at Selangor Water Works, EMS announced a significant interest by customers who are looking to deploy an AMR wide integrated solution for the water industry.

The system uses the proven Telemodem2 Mobile platform as the Meter Interface Unit (MIU) and it delivers daily meter reads over the GSM network Short Message Service (SMS).

The Telemodem2 provides a communications interface with Sensus compliant meters and on a daily basis sends meter readings via SMS to the data collection site.

Data collection is handled by Jekyll Remote Manager.

This is a powerful software tool that users will find intuitive to use with its clear Windows interface.

The software collects the SMS messages, verifies the data and compiles a database of the water meter readings.

Any out of limit alarm conditions, including high and low flow, are brought to the attention of the operator and alarms forwarded to mobile maintenance personnel for immediate action.

Remote Manager also provides the facilities for configuration of the remote MIUs and automatic fault detection, so reducing maintenance time on site.

The collected water meter data can be easily exported from the collection software database for analysis in other software packages e.g for tariff calculations.

The versatility and scalability of the Jekyll telemetry solution makes automatic reading a reality for both small and large scale users.
