John Crane helps stem the tide for Anglian Water
The ability to take total responsibility of a pump upgrade project has allowed John Crane to play an important part in improving the water services and flood defences of the Humberside area
In addition to supplying nine of its Type 3710 cartridge split seals, the company also installed them onto water pumps belonging to Anglian Water Services - geographically the largest water authority in the UK.
Having been impressed with products and service turnaround on a previous smaller contract, Anglian was happy to ask John Crane to tender for this project.
The company was awarded the contract on the basis of its competitive price, high level of service, wide product range and ability to handle the installation operation.
Anglian Water Riby Street Terminal pumping station is the largest of its kind within Anglian, with foul water pumps which handle sewage, and storm water pumps which draw flood water from the Grimsby area and discharge it into the Humber Estuary.
The pumps themselves are relatively inaccessible, being located up to 15 metres underground, with vertical line shafts connecting them to driving motors on the surface.
While conventional seal replacement would have meant dismantling the pumps, the split design of John Crane Type 3710 seals made this unnecessary and reduced the overall installation time by some 90%.
John Crane advanced split seal technology makes the Type 3710 cartridge split seals extremely easy to install, and readily adaptable for use on horizontal or vertical pumps, mixers and agitators, especially where reliability and minimal downtime are essential requirements.
Their design features pre-installed O-rings, integral non-clogging finger springs, and a cartridge design that automatically sets the working height and centres the gland in relation to the shaft.
They can also be installed without the use of any measurement or dial indicator.
