Users of John Crane products can be assured of their safety for use in hazardous environments now that a large proportion of the company product range has achieved full compliance with ATEX approval This confirms that the John Crane products involved meet the requirements of the ATEX Directive 94/9/EC that came into effect on 1st July 2003

The Directive controls the design of any equipment intended for use in potentially explosive environments.

Although the new rules naturally cover oil, gas, mining, chemical and pharmaceutical applications, many other less obvious areas where gas or dust-laden atmospheres are present will also be affected such as cereals, food, paper and wood processing.

To comply with the ATEX requirements, any piece of equipment must be designed to minimise the risk of ignition when used in such an environment.

John Crane single and dual cartridge seals, including containment seals, have received approval for ATEX Group II categories 2 and 3, as have the company range of couplings, such as the T and M Series models.

John Crane agitator seals including the CK series of liquid lubricated and gas barrier seals have received approval in categories 1, 2 and 3.
