Gastech 2006 in Abu Dhabi recently provided John Crane with an excellent opportunity to reinforce its growing credentials as a major supplier to the international gas sector

Gastech 2006 in Abu Dhabi provided John Crane with an excellent opportunity to reinforce its growing credentials as a major supplier to the international gas sector, displaying some of their many products that are finding increasing acceptance in this area When its comes to the large diameter sealing capabilities often required for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) applications John Crane is perfectly placed to provide a genuinely world-leading combination of products and expertise

The company displayed evidence of the major advances in LNG sealing solutions that have led to John Crane being selected as a supplier to the vast majority of the LNG plants built around the world over the past three years.

The company recently reinforced its LNG reputation by supplying gas seals for use on the world's largest-ever LNG compressor which is being built for use in Qatar.

This project demanded an incremental change in technology from John Crane, as the shaft size involved rose from a previous record of 330mm to 350mm.

John Crane undertook a considerable quantity of research and development work to accommodate the strict size, axial movement, labyrinth clearance and slow roll requirements of the seals and this has helped reinforce the company's leading role in LNG sealing.

Monitoring and control.

On Stand S1 John Crane also displayed examples from its Inovit range of gas seal support, monitoring and control systems.

The Inovit range has resulted from the company's unrivalled expertise in the design, production and installation of seals themselves, and this underlines John Crane's ability to supply this type of equipment.

John Crane designs and installs bespoke systems that satisfy individual customer requirements, and the inclusion of the company's well-proven SEPro and Monobloc technologies ensure that those systems are able to meet even the most challenging reliability demands.

Each system is also able to help the end-user comply with all relevant safety and environmental requirements.

Gastech also provided John Crane with an opportunity to emphasize the tremendous importance it places on the reliability of the products it supplies to the gas sector.

The company recently undertook a major GBP2.4 Million investment programme within its Turbomachinery Group and one of the first benefits resulting is the newly created Gas Seals Reliability Group.

Created specifically to maximise asset reliability and so help reduce the cost of ownership for John Crane customers, the Group's members have been drawn from many different areas to create a multi-skilled team able to adapt its services to the needs of each individual customer.

The Group uses advanced root cause analysis techniques to identify the real causes of gas seal problems, devise effective solutions and identify ways in which a customer can maximise plant reliability.

Wet-to-dry seal retrofitting is an important sector of the gas market, one in which John Crane leads the way: these abilities were in evidence on the Gastech stand.

John Crane has an unparalleled combination of knowledge, experience and expertise which enables it to perform gas seal retrofits on a complete turnkey basis.

This typically includes the supply of the seals and control system, project management, piping fabrication, site work and tie-ins, system integration, commissioning and training, thus providing the customer with a single-source solution to their needs.

The result is greatly improved plant safety thanks to the elimination of the wet seal system, reduced risk of process gas leakage, lower maintenance requirements and reduced operational cost.

Powerful power transmission.

John Crane also displayed examples of its high performance power transmission couplings for turbomachinery applications.

These include the Metastream series couplings that are designed for the complete range of turbomachinery applications, providing low overhung moment, light weight and a very high degree of reliability.

Typically these couplings feature shrouded discs and very high torque overload protection and are manufactured from high alloy steel with high strength stainless steel flexible elements.

Whatever the application the John Crane experience and product range ensure optimum reliability on a global scale from a supplier that is 'around the world, and around the corner'.
