John Crane has completed a EUR6m contract with GE Oil and Gas, in a Liquefied Natural Gas project.

The original contract saw John Crane supply mechanical gas seals to GE Oil and Gas for use on a major expansion of the Qatargas II gas project in Qatar.

This project - which supplies the UK with liquefied natural gas - is owned 70/30 by Qatar Petroleum and Exxonmobil.

John Crane established a development partnership with GE Oil and Gas, Qatargas and Exxonmobil to create gas seals specifically for use on an LNG compressor, which was built for the project.

The seals were manufactured at John Crane's facility in Slough, UK.

John Crane had to create seals large enough to fit GE's compressor and meet stringent capability tests.

The shaft size of John Crane's largest seal was increased from 300mm to 350mm in diameter, which has helped to boost production at the plant by 60 per cent.

The resulting seals are capable of handling temperatures from -110C to over 150C and a maximum pressure of 40bar - the pressure experienced at 365m underwater.

They have been tested by GE Oil and Gas and will go into service shortly.
