A Johnson Screens vertical drain improves the thickening (dryness) of a wastewater sludge by recovering the liquid phase situated under the crust

The sludge from wastewater treatment plants consists of a solid phase suspended in a liquid phase The solid is made up of mineral and organic matter present as flocs

If the sludge is left unagitated, it settles in layers in the bottom of the silo and a pasty crust forms on the surface.

In the intermediate zone, water circulates between the flocs of sludge.

It forms pockets, the majority of which are concentrated near the surface.

The installation of a Johnson Screens vertical drain improves the thickening (dryness) by recovering the liquid phase situated under the crust.

This has many advantages:.

* Economic - Reduction in the volume of sludge and therefore a reduction in the cost of removal and transport.

* Agriculture - Possibility of recycling a higher proportion of fertiliser material.

* Environment - Less energy expended in spreading and reduction in the risk of liquid sludge runoff or infiltration into the ground.
