The Jumo CTI-500, from Jumo Instruments, represents a new generation of conductivity transmitters, operating with inductive measurement.
This measurement principle, with the integrated functions, opens up numerous options that were previously considered to be impracticable for inductive measurement systems.
Up to now, for many applications there was only the choice between an economical conductive and an expensive inductive measurement system.
The conductive method of measurement performs excellently with clean media at low conductivities.
However, as soon as conductivity exceeds a few mS/cm, contamination tends to increase, and with it the danger of a layer being deposited on the surfaces used for measurement.
Such layers cause erroneous measurements that, in their turn, often lead to expensive regulation and control responses.
The only help is cost-intensive maintenance, or to use the inductive measurement method.
Previously, the high price was an apparently insuperable obstacle for the use of an inductive measurement system in cost-sensitive applications.
But the Jumo CTI-500 gets over this hurdle.
Its wide-ranging options for mounting in pipe systems and on containers, together with its range coverage from 0 - 500microS/cm to 0 - 2000milliS/cm make it into a universal instrument for general-purpose water engineering as well as for special tasks (for instance: water testing in flushing baths, dilution controls, bottle sterilisers, CIP installations).
As a head-mounted transmitter or as a sensor with detached transmitter electronics it can be manufactured with an extremely wide range of process connections.

The PP housing is a good solution for durability and cleaning.
The background-lit LC graphics display means that the indication of the Jumo CTI-500 can also be read in poorly illuminated installation locations.
The plain-text display, which can be switched between several languages, makes the device so easy to operate that you hardly need an operating manual.
The high enclosure protection rating - IP66 - and the cable lead-in through cable glands with M12 screw fixings mean that the device can be installed just about anywhere.
And if it is necessary, the optional M12 screw fixings enable replacement of the device without any problems.
As standard, two freely-programmable process value outputs are available (for conductivity and temperature).
On the one hand, you can freely select the signal type (current or voltage) and, on the other hand, freely scale the signal within the range of measurement.
The signals are, of course, electrically isolated from the supply voltage and from each other.
Two electrically isolated solid-state switches are available as switched outputs, which can switch up to 200mA without any problem for both AC and DC loads at 14 - 50V.
Two examples of the special features of the device are the measurement of concentration (eg caustic soda) and the dilution function.
Concentration measurement is used in cleaning processes, such as bottle sterilisation and CIP applications, as are to be found in breweries and beverage bottling plants.
The dilution function is a special feature.
This is used in cooling towers, where there is an interaction between time-dependent processes and control tasks.
The set-up programme that is available makes it possible to print out the configuration, thus making it easier to create the increasingly important system documentation.
The set-up programme can also be used to transfer a customised concentration curve to the Jumo CTI-500.
This function makes it possible to carry out customer-specific concentration measurements.
