The 'turbo-diesel' power converter

A Jumo Instrument Company product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Nov 17, 2004

Jumo IPC power converters have proven important advantages for the customer: cost reductions by elimination of the reactive power, and "soft" operation extending the life of the heater elements

Since the launch of the IPC power converters from Jumo, at the end of 2001, this innovative technology has proven its value in a multitude of field applications.

One of the most important advantages for the customer is the cost reduction achieved by elimination of the reactive power, the "soft" operation and, as a result, the long operating life of the heater elements.

Even higher-powered types have been developed, to expand the range of application.

The latest versions of these instruments are now able to drive low-voltage heater elements (SIC, Kanthal-Super or near infra-red heater elements) up to a total power of around 38 kW per unit.

The major advantages for the user are those for controlling heater elements at high temperatures.

* The reactive power component is eliminated, thus saving costs as no reactive-power compensation network is required.

* The "soft" drive method, which increases the service life of the heater element.

* The supply network is loaded by a sinusoidal current that is proportional to the power required (regardless of the rated current and voltage of the heater elements).

* Load output is short-circuit proof.

* No transformer + switchable voltage taps required (reduces volume and costs).

* "R-control" (resistance control for molybdenum disilicide heater elements).

* "SIC-voltage reserve" (monitoring of ageing of SIC heater elements).

* Automatic compensation for ageing of SIC heater elements.

* Complies with the present EU standards for harmonics and flicker.

* Reduced wiring costs.
