Lubrication of Falk Coal mill gears and pinions

A Kluber Lubrication GB product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Nov 6, 2003

Kluberfluid CF3 product was chosen for the lubrication of mill gears and pinions in a major power generation company following extensive testing, and all their coal mills have now converted to CF3

Due to frequent pinion failures prior to August 2001 with a competitor product, the power generation company sought to try and test a number of competitive products for the lubrication of mill gears and pinions.

Modern lubrication of large gear drives requires systematic lubrication with adhesive high performance lubricants.

When the use of high performance gear lubricants is combined with regular inspections and preventative maintenance it can ensure trouble free operation, thus optimising productivity and gear life.

Kluberfluid CF3 was put forward as an alternative.

The CF3 was finally selected as the main lubricant due to a number of issues.

Firstly in addition to the reconditioning service (chemical action products and running in products) offered by Kluber, the CF3 has a higher viscosity to that of the previously used Asphaltic lubricant.

Other benefits observed with the CF3 are the allowance of examination of the gear condition with a strobe light whist the mill is in service unlike the Asphaltic and Graphite products.

There is no difficult removal of Asphaltic or Graphite product during overhauls thus a reduction in labour.

The CF3 does not set, eliminating the build-up of trapped dirt, which is now flushed away from the gears.

The electronic spray systems are now more reliable for frequent spraying so interruptions are less likely.

In addition to their own findings the CF3 is now approved by Falk.

The power generation company have continued to use the CF3 product which has also proved to be commercially competitive and have now converted all mills over to CF3.

Kluber continue regular monitoring of drive performance for the customer including stroboscopy, vibration, imprinting and temperature measurement.
