Brewery saves energy and improves food compliance

A Kluber Lubrication GB product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Apr 15, 2008

A major UK Brewery, faced with the task of reducing their overall costs, whilst maintaining food grade compliance, has saved GB15000 in energy alone by converting to Klubersynth on elevator gearboxes

The brewery was faced with the task of reducing their overall costs with an emphasis on a reduction in energy consumption, whilst maintaining their priority to meet with food grade compliance and switching to predominantly more expensive food grade lubricants, compared to the previous non food grade mineral oils.

Following a consultation with Kluber Lubrication, a trial of their NSF H1 Klubersynth UH1 6-220 was recommended to replace the previously used non-food grade mineral oil.

The brewery engineers, along with Kluber, identified a trial elevator gearbox and amp measurements were taken 3 times a day over a five day period with the previous mineral lubricant to act as a baseline.

The oil was replaced with Klubersynth UH1 6-220 and the exercise repeated.

After the five day trial had been completed, the energy consumption had reduced from 4.33 amps to 3.58 amps, a reduction of 0.753 amps.

This equates to a 17.3% energy saving compared to the mineral oil product.

By converting over to the NSF H1 registered Klubersynth UH1 6-220 the Brewery now meets its food grade compliance policy, and oil drain intervals can be extended to at least 5 years thus prompting savings on maintenance.

However in addition to meeting their food grade policy they were also able to reduce lubricant spend due to increased lubrication intervals, and also meet their required energy savings.

Over a full year the energy savings associated with this gearbox alone were calculated out as GBP82.

Working on an average of 10% reduction in energy across all their elevator gearboxes, the savings in energy alone will be approximately GBP15,000.

The brewery have since to converted all 350 elevator gearboxes over to the Klubersynth UH1 6-220.
