Flowmeters for dosing in Kazakhstan oil
refinery
Fourteen variable area flowmeters were supplied to engineering company Valsave Engineering Services Ltd as part of a polymer dosing system which will be used to treat waste water at an oil refinery
Fourteen variable area flowmeters from Krohne have been supplied by engineering company Valsave Engineering Services Ltd (VES) as part of a polymer dosing system which will be used to treat waste water at an oil refinery in Kazakhstan The dosing system consists of 14 individual dosing units which control the introduction of a polymer solution to the waste water

The polymer combines with the waste particles contained in the water to create larger elements which are then filtered to leave purified water.
The Krohne VA 40 flowmeters accurately measure the amount of water that is introduced into the polymer to create the polymer solution.
If too little is added more polymer will be used and the cost of the process will increase substantially - while too much will not achieve a sufficient level of water purity.
The water is added at a dilution ratio of 100:1 to the polymer, which flows at rates of between 2 and 3.6 litres per hour.
The flowmeters are configured in four sets of three plus one set of two, which allows the refinery to run either one, two or three dosing units at a time and provide full duty back up should a unit fail.
The Krohne VA 40 variable area flowmeter is designed for the measurement of liquids and gases.
It is manufactured from stainless steel and incorporates a shatterproof viewing window so its contents can be visually monitored.
The units are available with a range of connections to suit different applications.
The dosing units feed the polymer into a mixing device, which is patented by VES.
The flowmeters are fitted with adjustable limit switches, which provide an output to a SCADA system within the control centre of the refinery.
Krohne won the order because its instruments were already certified for use in Kazakhstan.
"This project is a substantial order for us and, we hope, the first of many," said a spokesperson for VES.
"Kazakhstan has stringent requirements of the materials that are used within its oil refineries.
Because Krohne has certification for the use of its products in the country, this gave us an immediate advantage - and the confidence of our customer.".
