Following signing a global supply contract with Degussa, one of Germany's largest chemical companies, Krohne has provided all flow measurement instruments for the company's new production division in China.

The new Degussa plant is located in the Minhang Industrial Development Zone in Shanghai and produces a variety of chemical products, including special coating additives.

Degussa, which turns over Euro11.2bn and has nearly 45,000 employees worldwide, has installed a number of Optimass Coriolis mass flowmeters, which range in size from DN 10 to DN 25.

The largest diameter instruments are fitted with heated jackets to help keep raw materials flowing through them in a liquid state.

Flow measurement is taken with the material viscosity at 15m Pa at 100C.

Applications at the new plant can be extremely demanding.

Flow rates can reach 6,000 kg per hour and a number of instruments had to be installed close to pumps, which caused strong vibration and created pulsing flows of raw materials - creating conditions which many flowmeters would find difficult to operate in reliably.

Despite this, the Krohne flowmeters performed to specification and delivered the required level of measurement accuracy.

Prior to installing the instruments, Degussa re-tested each Optimass against industrial scales, which confirmed the high accuracy of each instrument.

Krohne developed the world's first Coriolis mass flowmeter with a single, straight-tube design.

In 2002 a new enhanced design was launched under the Optimass brand.

It is available in a range of sizes and can be used for low and high flow rate applications.

Designed to meet ATEX, FM and CSA standards, the Optimass is suitable for use in hazardous conditions.

Wetted parts of the instrument can be manufactured from titanium, stainless steel or Hastelloy and each unit is made in accordance with European Pressure Equipment Directives (PED).

The Optimass will operate reliably and accurately under the most demanding conditions.

It incorporates the Krohne patented Adaptive Sensor Technology (AST) which tunes each meter independently of external forces and fluid density.
