Monitoring cooling water flows at
AstraZeneca
AstraZeneca is using Krohne flow switches to check the flow rate of cooling water feeding through condensers at its manufacturing plant in Macclesfield
'The key to maximum condenser efficiency is the flow rate of the cooling water', says Kevin Whitehead, Control and electrical engineer at AstraZeneca: 'The Krohne switches enable us to precisely balance the flow of water throughout the system and keep an eye on potential problems' The switches being used by AstraZeneca are from the Krohne DW18 series

Entry level, high performance flow converter
Krohne has launched the IFC100, a signal converter for its Optiflux range of electromagnetic flowmeters that offers excellent performance at an entry level price
They offer a cost effective alternative to variable area (VA) flowmeters and, unlike VA flowmeters, which can only be mounted in the vertical axis, the DW18 series can be mounted to both the horizontal or the vertical axis.
This extra flexibility makes the switches easy to install in existing systems.
With the DW18 series, AstraZeneca also has the added benefit of being able to fit high/low switches should alarms and trips be required to warn of potential flow problems.
Whitehead adds, 'We have also installed DW18 series switches in our heating, cooling and chilling systems at Macclesfield.
These are used to measure the flow of chilled water mixed with glycol.
The results have always been consistently accurate and repeatable'.
The Krohne DW18 series flow switches are of rugged construction and are available in stainless steel or bronze.
Several special versions are available to suit a wide variety of industrial flow monitoring applications, including an Ex version featuring a flameproof aluminium enclosure, and a high temperature model.
