The refrigeration capacity as well as the gas flow volume can be adjusted using different heater settings.
The required amount of liquid nitrogen can also be reduced to a minimum by adjusting the heater.
The nitrogen gas flow is then directed to the object to be cooled through a vacuum-jacketed, flexible metal tube.
A Kaltgas system can produce a gas stream with a temperature of -180C within only a few minutes.
In most cases, this Kaltgas system is used solely to produce the cold gas stream.
The gas stream can also be regulated with an automatic controller.
However, since this controlled system is employed without counter-heat the temperature, depending upon the set-up of the system, it is only between +/-1 to 5C.
To improve this temperature stability, a heat exchanger has to be employed.
This can be connected directly to the tube, or alternatively installed in a chamber next to the ventilator.
The heat exchanger heats the cold gas stream to the desired temperature.
This method produces a coolant in the form of a gas stream with an exactly defined volume and temperature as it exits the heat exchanger.
If so specified by the customer, temperature stability of less than +/- 0.1C can be achieved using the optimised controllers.
In addition to rapid cooling and consistent controllability, another major advantage of the Kaltgas systems is in the modular design.
By exchanging individual components, such as gas tube, heater or heat exchanger, the cooling capacity as well as the cooling speed can be adjusted.
The basic modules such as the LN2-container, vacuum pump or temperature control panels remain the same.
