Food safety issues to be addressed at L.A.B

A Leipziger Messe product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Aug 3, 2007

Leipziger Messe announces 'The Food Science Laboratory' track which completes the extensive conference programme at the L.A.B Exhibition, in London

Launching in the UK 2-4 October 2007, the new L.A.B trade fair and conference will showcase international manufacturers and provide industry professionals with the opportunity to discuss prevalent issues in the food and beverage industry.

With the introduction of the 2004 European Union guidelines on the labelling of genetically modified (GM) ingredients and growing concerns over diseases such as avian flu and BSE, the need for comprehensive methods of food testing and analysis is becoming increasingly important.

'The Food Science Laboratory' conference stream, chaired by Dr Paul Berryman, Research Director for Leatherhead Food International, will facilitate discussion of these issues.

A former Public Analyst, Paul Berryman has worked in the food testing industry for 27 years and will provide an insight into methods of testing, application examples and process optimisation at L.A.B.

The conference stream will give industry experts the chance to share knowledge on the importance of these issues, and present a wide variety of topics to an interested audience.

'The Food Science Laboratory' takes place on 3 October 2007 and speakers will include:.

* John Lewis, Nanoparticle Team, Central Science Laboratory, whose presentation will discuss 'Nanotechnology in the food lab' and will cover the use of nanoemulsions in food and beverages, the safety testing of food nanomaterials, product innovation and global regulatory framework.

* Mark Woolfe, Food Authenticity Branch, Food Standards Agency, who will examine the use of DNA assays to enforce food labelling legislation.

* Roy Betts, Head of Microbiology, Campden and Chorleywood Food Research Association, will focus on the advances in microbiological methods for food testing.

Other topics to be discussed during the conference include:.

* Applications of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) in food science.

* Process Analytical Technology (PAT) in the food industry.

* Optical methods for in-line process optimisation in the food and beverage industry.

* Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy in food science and technology.

* Applications of microbe Raman spectroscopy in food science.

Conference chair Paul Berryman comments: "The food and beverage industry comprises a wide range of processes, including research and development, manufacturing and quality control.

Scientific testing and analysis is an essential part of each of these stages, from determining ingredients to verifying food authenticity and complying with strict regulations.

This conference stream at L.A.B will provide the ideal forum for industry professionals to address food science and safety issues, and to gain an insight into improving current processes".
