Waste and recycling processing specialist MDJ Light Brothers has more than doubled staff as part of expanding its office equipment processing service at the Aylesford site

The former UK Recycle IT facility, which inspects, refurbishes and recycles redundant office electronic equipment such as PCs, was taken over from Kent and Medway ReMaDe by Light Brothers in April, immediately saving four full-time jobs and creating three more The Aylesford operation handles bulk loads of PC systems (processor units, standard and flat screen monitors, keyboards, mice and cabling) as well as laptops, larger servers, telephones and switchboards, faxes, printers, photocopiers, other office equipment, and traditional and flat screen TVs

Equipment is tested and, where appropriate, refurbished, using parts cannibalised from other machines to create 'new' working equipment.

Some refurbished computers are supplied to specialist charities providing IT to Africa.

A further 10 full-time staff have now been recruited to support continuing growth of the business, which is processing 'noticeably higher' volumes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) as a result of the the WEEE Directive implementation in July.

Light Brothers estimates that WEEE processing could represent 40% of its total business by the year end, and the company was recently a finalist in the Electrical and Electronic Recycler of the Year category of the 2007 National Recycling Awards.

As well as the primary job of de-manufacturing or refurbishing PCs and laptops, the additional staff will also work on a new service.

They will dismantle cathode ray tubes (CRTs), such as PC monitors and televisions, into their core materials.

Around 90% of a typical CRT can be recycled, especially the plastics, metals and glass.

This new Aylesford service supports the Light Brothers main CRT processing facility at its Lewes, Sussex, headquarters which currently handles around 50,000 CRTs a month.

The first in the UK to process and recycle fridges and freezers, MDJ Light Brothers has invested over GBP2 million since 2006 in people, plant and premises for processing domestic and business electrical equipment.

Phil Burgon, the Light Brothers national recycling manager who oversees the Aylesford operation, said: "The impact of the WEEE Directive and Light Brothers reputation for a quality and flexible service has attracted noticeably higher volumes of WEEE for processing.

As a result, I'm delighted to have recruited more staff at Aylesford and to extend what we do there.

"Aylesford is playing an increasingly important role in helping public and private sector organisations to dispose of their old equipment in a way that maximises recycling, reuse and recovery".

As well as the Aylesford facility, Light Brothers has three sites in Sussex (two at Lewes and one at Heathfield) and one in Daventry, Northants, and works closely with waste authorities, compliance schemes and waste management contractors.
