Measuring CO2 in ice in Antartic
conditions
A leading US scientist has chosen the rugged Sierra Instruments Smart-Trak 100 mass flow controller as part of his polar test equipment on CO2 absorption
Researcher David Mucciarone selected the Smart-Trak 100 digital mass flow controller to form an integral part of a carbon analyser because it is able to operate effectively in harsh marine conditions and at very low temperatures Mucciarone chose the Smart-Trak 100 mass flow controller because the meter he was previously using failed prior to setting sail for the Antarctic and he required a robust solution at short notice, which Sierra Instruments was able to provide

The scientist travelled to the Antarctic to attempt to find out conclusively how human activity is impacting the environment and determine a course of action to reverse the process.
Testing polar ice is an important part of this research.
Mucciarone spends two months of the year testing the breakdown of inorganic carbon in sea and ice to learn how much CO2 the sea can digest.

The Smart-Trak 100 is used to monitor the amount of CO2 in samples of sea and ice in order to provide data that can then be analysed.
His research has been so successful that Mucciarone plans to do similar testing on reefs and other ocean eco systems using the Smart-Trak 100 as part of his testing and analysis equipment.
Litre Meter, a leading manufacturer and supplier of custom flow meters, is the UK distributor for the Sierra Instruments range of flowmeters.
As with their own range of custom flowmeters, the Sierra Instruments range is designed to operate in some of the harshest conditions on the planet.
Smart-Trak is accurate and reliable with instrument stability resulting from its inherently linear design, advanced platinum sensor technology, and a responsive control valve that is strong and flexible and can control gas mass flow from <1 sccm to 200 slpm.
Data accuracy was a key issue for Mucciarone in order to compile meaningful research data.
The Smart-Trak 100 has an accuracy of +/-0.7 per cent of the reading.
Smart-Trak features Dial-A-Gas Multiple Gas capability for true digital performance in many gases with the same unit.
Ten pre-programmed gases come as standard and nine other gases can be programmed in by the user according to individual test requirements.
The pilot module can control gas type, set-point value, set-point source, engineering units, output signal and the valve state (open, closed or automatic).
The Model C100 can be used with any clean gas including mixtures, toxics, corrosives and combustibles in a variety of test applications and is constructed in robust 316 steel.
The unique pilot module replaces expensive control/readout electronics and is available mounted to the face of the instrument or in a convenient hand-held version.
