US Navy deploys Sierra ultrasonic flowmeters

The Innova-Sonic in-line flowmeter from Sierra Instruments has been selected as part of a fuel-management system by both the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) and the United States Navy (USN).

The Innova-Sonic in-line flowmeter was selected because it is one of only a few flowmeters assessed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for shipboard use.

The Sierra Innova-Sonic model 205 clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter is being used by the US Navy for both fuel oil and water measurement.

It was selected not only because it is ABS assessed but also because it features 'clamp-on' sensors that can be fixed to the outside of fuel and water lines with no intrusion into existing piping.

This makes retrofitting very easy.

Because the USN deploys frequently to all parts of the world it wanted to ensure that the quantity of fuel that it is billed for is in fact what is piped aboard.

That is also the reason the RSN selected the Sierra model 206 in-line ultrasonic flowmeter.

Before the RSN chose Sierra an exhaustive search was undertaken to identify the best meter to double check the fuel amounts received.

The RSN chose the Sierra Innova-Sonic in-line digital correlation transit-time ultrasonic flowmeter because it provided a combination of economy, accuracy (+/- 0.5 per cent of reading) and installation (no sensing ports to plug).

The Innova-Sonic model 206 measures the transit time-of-flight in picoseconds, 10e-12 (one trillionth of a second).
