Process plant performance directly to web browsers

A MDC Technology product story
Edited by the Processingtalk editorial team Dec 31, 2002

e-fficiency is a proven Internet-based service that delivers information on the performance of plant equipment directly to a web browser for easy and secure access by process manufacturing customers.

This innovation makes Emerson Process Management the first company to apply Internet technology to equipment performance monitoring in the process industries.

Designed specifically for personnel involved with maintenance, reliability or rotating equipment, e-fficiency provides easy access to a comprehensive set of performance results, customised reports and graphical representations for monitoring plant equipment performance, all within a secure web-based environment.

The service supports all major process plant equipment, including compressors, gas and steam turbines, heat exchangers, furnaces and pumps.

Over the past 10 months e-fficiency has been successfully introduced and deployed with key Emerson customers in the process manufacturing industries.

Customers send equipment and process data from their plants via the Internet to e-fficiency, where rigorous model-based technology is applied, generating performance information for use in managing assets.

e-fficiency addresses the growing demand for reliable plant equipment performance monitoring to meet the needs of customers switching from routine to targeted maintenance programs, thereby maximising the utilisation of their process assets.

"We believe this new approach will revolutionise current methods and set new standards for performance monitoring," explained Ross Smith, CEO of MDC Technology, a division of Emerson Process Management, and the developers of the e-fficiency service.

"e-fficiency will soon be seen as the industry standard, providing easy to use, accurate and reliable performance monitoring information to customers striving to increase the utilisation of their assets.

The adoption of e-fficiency has already led to impressive results - the quick, cost-effective deployment has allowed customers to make significant savings, typically in the range of $1 million to $8 million per year, by making informed decisions on poorly operating equipment." The key to the e-fficiency equipment monitoring service lies in its rapid deployment and ease-of-use, allowing customers to: * Track equipment degradation and cost.

* Compare equipment performance across multiple plants.

* Access equipment performance data remotely over the Internet.

* Produce accurate reports against performance targets.

* React quickly to changes in equipment performance.

* Optimise cleaning and maintenance cycles.

* Increase operating performance at plant level.

The e-fficiency approach to performance monitoring is unrivalled in the industry.

It combines the use of rigorous model-based technology with data reconciliation and parameter estimation software that has already been applied to over 1,500 items of plant equipment today.

e-fficiency is a key element of the Asset Utilisation service from Emerson Process Management, which combines world-class services with innovative products to significantly improve process plant reliability.

The results include improved process availability, increased productivity, and reduced equipment cost-of-ownership.

"The e-fficiency equipment performance monitoring service was one of the most exciting new technology deployments already underway when Emerson acquired MDC Technology," said John Berra, Executive Vice President of Emerson with responsibility for the Process Management business.

"We saw tremendous potential to leverage the 20 years of MDC Technology experience in process modelling and optimisation to give our customers a unique capability for monitoring and improving equipment performance".

The e-fficiency vision is for all process manufacturing companies to have quick and easy access to equipment performance data anywhere in the world.
