Moody Fastpack recently completed the installation and commissioning of a major canning project for Daniel Thwaites Brewery at Blackburn in only 12 days

Moody Fastpack have recently installed a major canning project for Daniel Thwaites Brewery at Blackburn Following a detailed can line design study, the project was implemented by the Fastpack team in close conjunction with the project team led by Grahame Brindle, Project Engineer at Thwaites

The study involved detailed site surveys, preparation of overview options, detailed costings and an in depth review of the anticipated project programme to enable a cost effective solution to be formulated.

This significant project included a major revision to the existing can line to integrate a new Hicone 8302 fast changeover machine, a new bar-code scanning and verification system, installation of a pre-owned and refurbished ionised air rinser, as well as major improvements to the can conveying and control system.

The installation of the Hicone machine also required the synchronised control interface with the existing ZVT tray loader and shrink wrapper enabling the replacement of sections of the pack conveying system.

Further elements of the project centred upon the electrical control system where a new control panel suite was designed and installed utilising a Siemens S7 PLC system and Danfoss frequency inverters to provide fully modulating speed control.

Moody Fastpack was responsible for the project engineering, supply and installation of all equipment, platform modifications as well as the mechanical and electrical services.

This complex programme was approached in military detail commencing on Good Friday 2006.

All equipment and services were installed and commissioned in just 12 days, ensuring the Thwaites production re-commenced on time and schedule despite the very tight timescales.

Mick Cockshott, Project and Utilities Manager at Thwaites commented; "This project has already delivered significant line efficiency improvements and is a prime example of how much can be achieved in a short space of time with meticulous planning, good quality support and teamwork.".
