MTL has been serving the process industries since its formation in 1971: it is mainly involved with the design, manufacture and sale of intrinsic safety (IS), control and surge protection products

Today, the MTL Instruments Group plc comprises 17 operating companies worldwide, nine of which are engaged in the design, manufacture and sale of intrinsic safety (IS), control and surge protection products For those unfamiliar with the term, intrinsic safety is an explosion prevention technique for use in the hazardous areas on processing plants, and is the only one certified for use in Zone 0, the zone of highest hazard

As world leader in the development and production of IS devices for hazardous-area applications within the process control industry, MTL has built up a supply and support network serving more than 50 countries, with major design and manufacturing centres in the UK, the USA, India and Germany.

Besides its Zener barriers, galvanic isolators, multiplexers, displays and touch-screen computers, MTL provides its most recent innovation, block and modular Process I/O.

This is flexible, remote distributed I/O for field mounting in virtually any process environment, be it harsh or benign.

It can increase plant flexibility and provide cost savings on subsequent projects.

MTL products are used in all sorts of locations, both hazardous and general purpose, from offshore oil and gas sites to pharmaceuticals and other manufacturing plants.

Life cycle cost of ownership is always a priority for our designers, and this is translated into ease of installation, ease of use and maintenance, and ease of duplicating solutions around the world.

Quality is another obsession at MTL, and is recognised by international ISO 9001 certification as well as regular audits from customers and certification authorities around the world.

Certifying bodies that have approved MTL products include those in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Korea, Russia, the United Kingdom and the USA.

The MTL group today comprises four core business units.

The Hazardous Area business unit is responsible for the established MTL Intrinsic Safety activities and supplies our world leading isolators and barriers to the process industry.

Hazardous Area products include: Intrinsic Safety Interfaces such as Isolators and Zener Barriers; Interfaces for safety critical applications, such as Shut-down and Fire and Gas systems; Hazardous Area I/O; Fieldbus components -for general purpose use and for hazardous areas; Field-mounted Intrinsically Safe Displays.

MTL Surge Technologies is a leader in the protection of control and instrumentation systems, industrial networks and telecommunications infrastructure from damage caused by voltage surges of the sort associated with lightning strikes and the switching of heavy electrical equipment.

Main products include: Protection for mains electrical supplies; Protection for analogue and digital signals in instrumentation; Protection of antennas and base stations.

MOST, or MTL Open Systems Technologies: Recently introduced international data standards have meant that, just like in the world of personal computers, end users and system integrators are now able to build their measurement and control systems using best of breed components, all of which are fully interoperable.

Open systems products include: MTL 8000 series remote I/O; Axe hybrid controllers; Transport and I/O 95 remote I/O; Open control platforms.

HiTech Instruments manufacture gas analysis equipment for the food and packaging industries as well as speciality gasses.
