Monitoring sulphates and chlorides in
boiler water
Ferrybridge Power Station uses Metrohm on line ion chromatography systems to monitor sulphates and chlorides in boiler water, to pre-empt any future problems
Ferrybridge Power Station uses Metrohm on line ion chromatography systems to monitor sulphates and chlorides in boiler water The 821 Compact Process Analyser has been running continuously at Ferrybridge C Power Station since December 2003 monitoring chloride and sulphate in water within boiler units

There are 4 units that make up this 2MW coal power station and 2 of the units are being monitored in turn so a result is obtained every 30 minutes for each unit.
With the statistical trend plotting software, one can see trends as they emerge and pre-empt any future manufacturing problems.
The water that is fed into the unit is demineralised and should generally contain few chloride ions.
An increase in chloride indicates that there is a leak in the condenser tube, which needs to be repaired.
The system has to go offline for any maintenance work but the downtime is minimised as the Metrohm Process Analyser highlights the problems before they become too serious.
From a commercial standpoint, the boiler units should be online as much as possible, as power is not being generated (along with revenue) when the system is offline.
When the system is offline, sulphate in the boiler units comes from a variety of sources, the chloride decreases as the sulphate increases.
When the system is online the chloride increases and the sulphate decreases as flue gases come into the boiler units.
Ferrybridge have Metrohm Compact stand alone ICs in their laboratory but with the 821 Compact Process Analyser the analysis is on-line, at the point of sampling releasing their analysts to perform other duties.
The staff at Ferrybridge have been pleased by the robustness and reliability of the instrument which requires minimal user maintenance and intervention.
For an invitation to attend a seminar on ion analysis in the Power Industry on April 6th and see the 821 on-line IC system plus many more analytical instruments please contact Marie Longdon. Request a free brochure from Metrohm UK ...
