The determination of acidity in soft
drinks

Fizzy drinks are the main cause of increasing tooth erosion among teenagers, research suggests: titration is the most universally used technique to determine this acidity

A study in the British Dental Journal found a strong link between fizzy drink consumption and tooth erosion The risk of tooth erosion was 59% higher in 12-year-olds, and 220% higher in 14-year-olds who drank fizzy drinks

Drinking at least four glasses a day was associated with an increased risk of 252% in 12-year-olds and a massive 513% increased risk in 14-year-olds.

Many soft drinks have high levels of acidity.

These can over time damage the protective layer around teeth.

This can make the teeth more sensitive and potentially painful.

Many soft drinks manufacturers now add calcium or other agents to their drink to make them less harmful to teeth.

Considering the increasing prevalence of tooth erosion, especially in young children and teenagers and the strong association between consumption of acidic drinks and tooth erosion, it still seems logical to continue the development of drinks with low erosive potential.

With this in mind the acidity level in soft drinks must be determined accurately so these new advances in soft drinks with low erosive potential can continue successfully.

Titration is the most universally used technique to determine this acidity.

An autotitrator, such as a Food Titrino from Metrohm already has the test method and all the accessories needed to carry out such a test.

The Food Titrino offers you a complete package for all the usual analyses in the food industry.

Apart from almost 100 ready-to-use determination methods with detailed documentation you will also receive the accessories needed for your titrations including the electrode Ecotrode Plus, electrolyte and buffer solutions.

The Metrohm Food Titrino is a compact titrator with an LCD screen for real-time curve display.

It is intended for universal use as it offers all the important basic methods used in practice.

With the Food Titrino you have the possibility of storing your titration methods not only in the instrument internal memory, but also on a memory card, which makes them transportable.

This card ensures that all your laboratories work with the same method.

Operation via the backlit LCD screen in seven selectable dialog languages is extremely easy.

The connection of a PC keyboard and/or a barcode reader (options) is very advantageous and helps avoid errors when alphanumerical sample data have to be entered or read in. Request a free brochure from Metrohm UK ...

The balance connection eliminates input errors; the printer connection ensures complete documentation of the determinations.
