Innovative food ingredients manufacturer Manchester Rusk Company, has won a prestigious 'Green' award for an impressive waste disposal project that saved GBP10,000

Innovative food ingredients manufacturer Manchester Rusk Company (MRC), has won a prestigious 'green' award for an impressive waste disposal project that saved GBP10,000 The company secured the Envirowise Award at the Northwest Food Awards in the "Preserving Our Environment" category, after implementing an impressive range of measures that demonstrated best practice for reducing its environmental impact and becoming more resource efficient

As part of its waste disposal efficiency programme, the company reduced the waste it sends for landfill disposal by 70 tonnes a year - equivalent to a massive 85 per cent of its waste - with a cut in waste disposal costs of GBP10,000 a year.

It also reduced the frequency of waste collected from its site to once a fortnight from once a week, thereby minimising CO2 emissions from vehicle movements, and reduced the number of its general waste skips from two to one.

To achieve its goals, the company invested in a twin chamber baling machine for cardboard and plastic waste, whilst segregating the materials using colour coded bins for on-site collection by the workforce before processing it with the baler.

MRC worked closely with the environmental organisation Groundwork EBS Manchester, Salford and Trafford, which helped the company attract grant funding for the baling equipment.

In addition, Waste Management Ltd, like MRC, a member of the Business Environment Association, conducted a free waste audit to examine the scope for savings.

Dave Wheeler, MRC production manager, said: "We realised our waste disposal could be more efficient and, like many other companies, we faced rising disposal costs.

As an environmentally aware business, we were determined to resolve those issues and we encouraged all employees to think again about waste matters by increasing their awareness of the benefits of recycling.

Consequently, shop floor efficiency has increased, as has staff morale and site safety - and we have reduced transport costs".

MRC is a successful privately-owned family business and has been established for over 30 years.

It is at the forefront in the development of glazes, coatings, sauces, marinades, dressings and seasonings for the ingredients, processing, butchery, food service and retail sectors.

The awards, which were presented at a ceremony at the Manchester Midland Hotel, were organised by the Northwest Food Alliance in recognition of the major role the agri-food and drink sector plays in the region's economy.

Pat Foreman, chief executive of the Northwest Food Alliance, said: "We were thrilled with the quality of the entries we received from across the region and the sponsors even had a difficult task in choosing the winners".
