Manchester Rusk is celebrating after winning an impressive third prestigious environmental award, boosting its green credentials, as well as significantly reducing its impact on the environment

MRC, which manufactures sauces, seasoning, marinades and glazes for the food industry, picked up the award in the Best Environmental Practice SME category at the Northwest Business Awards A range of measures introduced by the company since its relocation to Sharston, Manchester, in 2003, has reduced energy costs by 60 per cent, lowered carbon emissions by 12 tonnes per year, and achieved a reduction in landfill waste by an impressive 95 per cent

Steps to reduce vehicle usage have lowered fuel costs by 50 per cent.

This is not the first time the company's green efforts have been recognised.

Last year it secured the Envirowise Award at the Northwest Food Awards in the "Preserving Our Environment" category.

And just before Christmas it took home a National Energy Efficiency Award.

Recent investments by MRC include highly efficient packaging machinery, a compressed air system, and energy efficient lighting in the main warehouse and factory.

As well as replacing all old style computer monitors with new low energy flat screens, the company has also installed electronic timers on all water heating and cooling units.

Commenting on the award, the MRC production manager, David Wheeler, said: "We will continue to prioritise the best environmental practices at MRC, and we are delighted that our efforts to have been recognised in this way.

Good environmental practices should be at the heart of everything a business does - both in terms of environmental impact and cost reduction".

Mr Wheeler also described the impact of the measures the company has taken: "Through our own innovation, and through sourcing government funding, we have managed to reduce the impact this company makes on the environment, reduced overheads dramatically and helped to secure and safeguard our own manufacturing future".

Other winners at the awards ceremony, which took place at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester, included Kellogg, APS, Persimmon, Birse Civils, and the North West Regional Assembly.
