Solution to corrosion for Northumbrian
Water
An unexpectedly high levels of corrosion was at the root of problems with two centrifuge cake disposal pumps, which needed frequent visits by maintenance staff at Honeyhill Water Treatment Works
Despite the fact that it had not supplied the original pumps, Northumbrian Water turned to Mono Pumps, an acknowledged expert in the field of water and waste handling A Mono materials specialist engineer visited the treatment works and undertook an analysis of the parts, identifying the problem and providing a solution

New Mono coating provides answer to rotor abrasion
Mono Pumps, a leading manufacturer of pumps and pumping solutions, has launched Duracoat 3000 - a new surface coating offering increased wear resistance for rotors used in highly abrasive environments
Mono discovered that the sludge cake contained carbon particles, which had been carried over from the filtration process.
Tests also showed that the centrifuge cake was acidic with a pH of 4.7, a common problem when water is being extracted from moorland regions, such as this application.
The combination of these two findings was found to be causing corrosion of the unplated, low carbon steel, rotor material.
Although this material lowers the initial purchase price, it fails to perform as well, and therefore results in high maintenance and costly spares.
The corroded surface of the rotor was also wearing away the stator, especially as it was on an intermittent duty, with the corroded rotor surface acting like 'sandpaper' on the rubber stator.
Mono recommended installing a Widethroat W Range pump with a stainless steel, hard chrome plated rotor.
This will combat the acidic effects and counteract the abrasive nature of the sludge due to carbon particle carry over and prevent excessive wear on the rotor and stator.
Northumbrian Water (NWL) was able to purchase this new Mono Pump for the same cost as it would have been to replace the worn parts on the old pump.
Mono also offered the advantage over its competitors of having a UK manufacturing site, with spare parts available ex-stock, removing any delay in spare parts being despatched from overseas, together with an 'in-house' customer support department to resolve these customers problems.
Since the Mono Pumps installation some 2 years ago, the pump has run trouble-free, leading to NWL placing a further order with Mono for a new pump.
Mono Pumps is a leading manufacturer of progressing cavity pumps, grinders, screens and packaged pumping systems for the international water, wastewater, oil and gas, chemical, food and beverage and pulp and paper industries.
