Sewage from the premises of SAS UK passes through a Mono Muncher for maceration, prior to treatment by an advanced Sequencing Batch Reaction system installed by waste treatment specialists Bio-Bubble

A Mono Series 'A' Muncher has been specified as part of an innovative environmental sewage treatment system at the UK headquarters of a major software company in Buckinghamshire Raw sewage from the premises of SAS UK is passed through the Mono Muncher for maceration, prior to treatment by an advanced Sequencing Batch Reaction (SBR) system installed by waste treatment specialists Bio-Bubble of Hampshire

The Bio-Bubble SBR system benefits when the influent is consistently and reliably macerated so that blockages are prevented and effective treatment is guaranteed.

When the original macerating equipment was damaged, the Series 'A' Muncher was selected as the most effective, economical and reliable replacement.

Handling a capacity of 120m3/h the Muncher is more than capable of macerating a regular supply of raw sewage, containing solids and bio-degradable matter, on which the SBR systems depends.

Driven by a 1.5kW motor, the Muncher is a twin shaft, low speed, high torque grinder which allows liquids to pass through the cutter stacks, filtering and trapping the contained solids.

The differential speeds of the cutter stacks pull apart the solids, while its teeth crop and shear, enabling the Muncher to reduce solids such as rags, rope or plastics to a small particle size.

The Muncher is extremely powerful but also energy efficient, thanks to an integral gearbox which converts its low motor power into high output torque.

The shaft speed of 85 rpm offers low cutter tip speeds, and therefore dramatically reduces wear rates in comparison to high speed macerators, together with reduced noise levels.

After passing through the Muncher the macerated effluent collects in a holding tank, from where it is pumped to the Bio-Bubble SBR biological reactor, which aerates the sludge, treats it with carbon and allows it to settle.

The Bio-Bubble system provides a high level of treatment and is extremely effective in both limiting the emission of gases and dramatically reducing the final volume of sludge that needs to be disposed of.

All Mono Munchers are supplied complete with a Programmable Logic Control system designed to protect the equipment against damage from rogue materials or overloading.

Munchers are ideal for virtually any application that requires the fine grinding of high volumes of waste water or sludge in order to prevent blockages, protect other equipment and improve the efficiency of treatment processes.

Project architects for SAS UK project were Brocklehurst Architects of West Wycombe.
