The refurbishment of a sewage pumping station at one of the UK's top surfing resorts has been successfully completed by Mono Pumps, by installing new Mono Mutrators, within an agreed 10-day period

The refurbishment of a sewage pumping station at one of the UK's top surfing resorts has been successfully completed by Mono Pumps Pembrokeshire County Council needed to renovate the pumping station, which is located directly beneath a public toilet block at Whitesands Beach car park, on the west coast of Wales

The beach is popular with visitors all year round, so there is never a perfect time for the Council to carry out repair work.

With this in mind, Mono supplied and installed two Mono Mutrator pumping systems and associated equipment within just 10 days.

"A short downtime was essential," said Councillor Brian Hall, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation.

"This was to minimise potential disruption for visitors at this popular Pembrokeshire beach".

Mono removed the station's original Mono pumps (which had been in regular use since the 1950s), carried out civil engineering works, installed new Mono Mutrators, fitted new pipework and refurbished the pumping station within an agreed 10-day period.

A full control panel with anti dry-run protection and duty/standby operation was also installed.

Each of the Mutrator packaged systems comprise duty and standby Merlin progressing cavity pumps, together with two tri-hammer macerators, fitted into the suction line.

The Merlin pumps, driven by 3.7kW motors and delivering a maximum pressure of 8.2 bar, use their positive suction action to lift the wastewater into the cutting chamber of the macerators.

The macerators ensure that any fibrous or solid objects are finely macerated to eliminate the risk of pipework blockages and allow the sewage to be pumped at 6m3/h, into the main sewage system for further treatment.

The Mono positive displacement action of the Merlin pumps offers the benefits of smooth and controlled transfer of the sewage through small bore pipes into the main sewage system for further treatment.

Being a positive displacement pump, head is independent of speed.

This, combined with correct pump selection, leads to low wear rates, minimal spares usage, lower running costs, less downtime and hence least whole life costs.

On many high head pumping duties, Mono Mutrators can consume less than 50% of the energy of conventional sewage pumps.

The Mutrator range has various design options to suit specific applications.

Mutrators can be mounted vertically or horizontally to give the lowest possible design/construction costs and can be installed into an existing pump house or supplied as a complete sewage pumping station, ready to be installed and operational within 2 hours of delivery.

Mono prides itself on its capabilities to offer a total design, installation, commissioning and maintenance package, and being able to offer a complete supply and installation contract.
