The Mary Rose Trust is highly satisfied with the role of Mono pumps in the conservation of the historic 16th century warship the Mary Rose When maintenance recently became necessary on a gearbox inside the intricate polyethylene glycol (PEG) spray system, it was an ideal opportunity to inspect the pumps, although after ten years of constant service it was found that only a stator needed replacing

Further Cost Savings on Mono Hygienic Pumps
Further improvement to manufacturing processes enables Mono Pumps to pass cost savings to customers in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries with the Hygienic S Range pumps.
The Mono progressing cavity pumps were installed in 1995 to re-circulate the PEG which is crucial for the conservation of the ancient timbers.
Four smaller Mono pumps are also still performing well for the PEG heating and cooling circuits that ensure the fluid stays at a temperature of 18 to 23C all year round, so that it is correctly absorbed into the wood cell structure.
When the Mary Rose Trust received a lottery grant to continue the preservation of this project, they again turned to Mono when they required a further six Mono Industrial E range pumps as part of an upgrade to the heating and cooling circuits.

The hull of the Mary Rose lay in the Solent from the time of its sinking in 1545 to 1982, when it was raised in a celebrated salvage operation.
Because of this the fragile timbers require complete impregnation with PEG before they can be dried out without the fear of damage and physical distortion occurring.
Therefore the PEG is constantly sprayed over the surface of the timber to achieve this.
The spray system comprises two Mono E122 pumps operating in a duty/standby mode at a speed of 279rpm and re-circulating 2000 litres of PEG a minute.
The PEG solution returns to an open settlement tank from which it is drawn and passed through a filter before re-entering the spray system.
There are a total of 380 nozzles spaced at one metre intervals around the hull of the ship ensuring that the entire surface is evenly coated with a film of the preservative.
The excess solution falls into a special catchment tray beneath the hull which feeds the settlement tank and completes the circuit.
Built between 1509 and 1511 she was one of the first vessels able to fire a broadside.
She had a long and distinguished service record until her accidental sinking during an engagement with the French fleet just off Portsmouth in 1545.
The Mary Rose is the only 16th century warship on display anywhere in the world and can be viewed at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard together with thousands of historic treasures discovered along with the ship.
