Pump blockages solved at Hafan Derwen
Hospital
Onerous maintenance problems and frequent blockages in the sewage and waste water system at a hospital in Wales have been overcome with the installation of a Mono Series 'A' Muncher in the sewage sump
A recently completed project to solve the onerous maintenance problems of the sewage and waste water system at a hospital in Wales, has involved the installation of a Mono Series 'A' Muncher in the sewage sump The previous pump blockages are now a thing of the past as the Muncher has solved this problem by macerating all the heavy solids present in the flow, preventing pump blockages

Sewage from the 50 high dependency bed site and a new business unit, recently refurbished on site, drains into the sump under gravity.
Medical dressings and hygienic items, that sometimes find there way into the main drains, caused regular blockages and damage to the centrifugal pumps, an expensive and highly inconvenient problem to maintain.

New Mono coating provides answer to rotor abrasion
Mono Pumps, a leading manufacturer of pumps and pumping solutions, has launched Duracoat 3000 - a new surface coating offering increased wear resistance for rotors used in highly abrasive environments
Manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of the Muncher equipment on the sump inlet was therefore managed by the experienced Mono projects and installations team, to ensure all solids are macerated on entry to the sewage sump.
The Series 'A' Muncher is well proven in its ability to efficiently macerate raw sewage and solids within a flow.
Twin shafts are fitted with interleaving cutters and spacers to give 'positive displacement' solids grinding.
The differential speed of the cutters, pulls, and tears apart fibrous material, while the leading edge and sides of the cutter teeth, crop and shear plastic into small strips.
The circumferential 'land' of the cutter crushes friable or brittle waste and the resulting slurry can then easily be pumped to the local Sewage Treatment Works.
The NHS Trust also took advantage of the Mono packaging capability.
As well as manufacturing the Mono Muncher, the necessary supporting framework, control panel and cabling was supplied and installed by the Mono Projects Team, offering the customer a 'one stop shop' for the design, manufacture and installation of this equipment.
Commenting on the current operation of the system, the Maintenance Manager for Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust said, "Since installation of the new equipment we have experienced no further blockages - this is a vast improvement on the previous situation".
The site originally provided Mental Health Inpatient Services to the Counties of Pembrokeshire, Carmarthen and Ceredigion.
New purpose built facilities have been built in local communities with a smaller number of specialist care beds remaining on the Hospital site.
Following this re-provision of services a large part of the original hospital site and many of its listed buildings were sold to Carmarthenshire County Council who are currently developing the site as a business park, part of which use the existing sewer facility.
